Description
Tear-shaped outline. Circular discus with raised rim has central filling hole and relief: rosette of 16 petals twisted clockwise; uneven. Flat shoulder has herringbone (irregular). One airhole at back of nozzle flanked by small single incuse circles; groove from airhole to wickhole. Solid handle with two grooves above and one below. On base, two tear-shaped grooves with at least one single incuse circle at top and at least two inside (quincunx?).
Fabric, firing, and surface description
Typical Late Roman Attic lamp fabric (pale orangish red but core darker than surface; moderately fine), firing, and surface treatment (thin, mostly even, matte wash very slightly darker than surface fabric). Very clean seam and alignment.
Preservation comment
One large sherd preserves ca. 50% of lamp, including entire discus, back left shoulder, entire handle, and roughly half of base. Slight, sparse abrasion with very rare pitting; worn breaks; specks to patches of encrustation, especially on interior.
