Typological identification
Samos Cistern Amphora
Description
Rounded shoulder tapering to concave neck; slightly flaring rim with rounded lip. Thick strap handle with central groove, attached in narrow loop at shoulder and upper neck. Ridges on extant part of shoulder. A few small patches of black pitch on extant interior.
Fabric, firing, and surface description
Slightly coarse fabric consistently fired to brownish red; abundant small golden micaceous flakes, many flattened on both surfaces; other inclusions mostly light very small to tiny bits. Surface fired slightly darker, grey in patches. Interior smoothed; one patch of excess clay filling indentation at lower attachment of handle.
Preservation comment
One large sherd preserves ca. 25% of rim, shoulder, and upper body with one entire handle. Slight, sparse abrasion with minor scratching; somewhat worn breaks; thin, faint film of encrustation in patches.
