Middle Roman Amphora 3
Description
Cylindrical toe. The base is slightly concave with a central button that comes below the outer edge, likely indicating that this vessel was not meant to stand on its own.
Fabric, firing, and surface description
Consistently fired slightly granular orange-red fabric has few inclusions, occasional very small rounded light “lime“, fewer tiny dark bits; slightly micaceous. Very thin matte slip slightly darker than fabric on all extant surfaces where not chipped or abraded.
Preservation comment
One large sherd preserves entire toe and lower part of base. Slight, sparse abrasion and scratching on surface and chipping around edges; worn edges; few specks of encrustation.
