Description
Imported wheelmade fine-ware bowl. Narrow, beveled ring foot; pointed underside. Unsmoothed wheel ridges on interior. Spotty traces of glaze on exterior of wall and foot, as well as on bottom of foot, appear to have resulted from dripping; reserved underside; glazed interior. Profile resembles the Corinthian or Attic small echinus bowl or footed saltcellar, but the fabric, wheel ridges, and glazing are atypical.
Fabric, firing, and surface description
Fabric: 2.5 YR 6/8, light red. Slip: 10R 4/6, red, to 10R 2.5/1, reddish black. Somewhat hard, very fine fabric with frequent, very small, black and white inclu-sions. Semilustrous to dull slip, flaky, varying in thickness and color.
Preservation comment
One large fragment preserves almost entire base and small part of lower wall. Moderate abrasion, gouging, and pitting; very slight encrustation.
