Typological identification comment
Also known as Augst 38.
Description
Late Republican to Early Roman amphora for olive oil. Production in eastern coastal Italy during early phase, but expanding into northern Italy and Istria over time. Derived from Lamboglia 2 but displaying wide morphological variation. Ovoid, sagging to piriform body with solid spike toe, tall cylindrical neck, heavy collared rim, and tall vertical handles with circular to oval section. Variations in overall shape and rim over time distinguish sybtypes (A and B). Distributed chiefly in Italy to the Balkans and Aegean region.
