Major production of Roman red-gloss ware, or terra sigillata, based in the northern to western Black Sea. Concentration of workshops in the Crimea. Production and regional distribution dated Augustan into 3rd century, but export to eastern Mediterranean peaked ca. 50-150 CE. Fine, hard pinkish fabric with brownish to orangish red slip, sometimes faintly metalic, of variable thickness, typically reserving base, Wide range of forms, including open vessels (plates, trays, cups, bowls, beakers, chalices) and closed forms (jugs, lagynoi); occasional adornment with plantiform stamps, rouletting on inside, barbotine, and rarely appliqué on rim.
